Space


By space we can identify the body. The human body becomes visible by space, it radiates in a three-dimensional way. In space one can perceive the body moving, shaping, articulating and expressing itself. By the moving body on the other hand, we recognize space. As Laban says:

” Movement is the Life of Space”. Through the moving Body, we can define space in different aspects. We can organize it and orientate the body and its parts in space. We can recognize the dance of the continuous change of tension. By spatial concepts one articulates, changes, coordinates and organizes the own body in space in a conscious way. Body, movement and Space are a unity. They are mutually connected.














The space, the sphere around the body is called action or reaching space, personal space or Kinesphere.

Kinesphere
It is this space where action happens, the space, that the performer can reach with the parts of the body. Like the limbs, head, trunk. It is that space which surrounds the body.

This sphere is reachable either closer or further away from the centre of the body. Either using the full range of the body and its parts into space or restricting its spatial range and therefore moving more within the space between the body and its reachable space limit. This always without leaving the proper spot.
When moving away from the spot, displacing the body, we enter the general space, carrying the personal sphere with us.

General Space

General space is called this space, that is only reached by moving away from its fixed place or physical standing point, the Spot, into a “new space”. By transporting the body, means changing its spot, we can reach the space that is out of range when moving on a fixed spatial point.
The Kinesphere surrounds the body permanently.
It doesn’t matter the action, if we jump, go on the floor, run, walk, or turn. It is always present.

Inner Space

Also exists the Inner space, where we breath, the heart beats, the blood flows, where ideas and emotions appear, where movement, action starts. Movement can either initiate from inner space and travels towards outer space. Or vice versa, begins (always from a visible point of view) in outer space and travels towards Inner space.
