All kind of movement projection, its intensity, its range and direction depends on the quality and type of focus which we apply or express in a body action. The first idea that appears when thinking about Focus, are of course the Eyes, The Eyes are a very expressive element in Dance. They reflect the inner state of the Person, the feelings, emotions and state of mind. The eyes are the mirror of the soul.
But, one projects also with the other body parts in order to produce a certain idea, emotion, movement essence or quality.
We define two main qualities of focus and several types of projection.
External Focus and Internal Focus
External Focus
One defines a focus external, when the movement, the body part relates itself to the outer space, the general space. This significates, the body part establishes a clear relation to something in the general space. Like a person, an object or towards the own body.
Internal Focus
One defines an inner focus, when the movement, the body part relates itsself to the inner body space. That means, that the moving body part doesn’t establish any relation towards the outer space but relates towards its inner world, like the eyes sinking in when we think, or the hand relaxes.
Types of Projection
Grades of Projection
Is relates to the range of the projection. Means closer to the body or more fare away into the general space, when speaking about the external Focus.
Or, a deeper inside or less deeper inside, almost on the surface of the skin, when talking about the inner focus.
Simultaneous Projection
Is related to the Quality of the focus within the projecting body parts, which are involved in the body movement.
That means, within the whole-body movement can appear different Focus qualities, executed simultaneously by different body parts.
(Holding out the hand with an external focus and looking inside with the chest and eyes with an internal focus)
Double Projection
Relates to the simultaneous appearance of the two types of focus, Internal and external, in the same body part. (like in the Torso or Hand)
